The Challenge Cup was started in 1979 between Ocean City Marlin Club and Cape May Marlin and Tuna Club by Charlie Kratz from OCMC and Scott Smith from CMM&TC

The winners of the tournament thru the years are as below, some years are missing, we have to do a little research. We did have a few down years ( 9-11-01 ) was cancelled. Missing years 93-94-98-99. After a club wins three years in a row the cup is retired and the losing club buys a new Challenge Cup

Win or lose this is a great event, held in Ocean City each year. If you have the opportunity to attend it’s well worth the trip.

In 2006 SUPERCREWscored big for Cape May, but in the end the team was a few points short of victory and tournament directory Eldon Poolesurrendered the cup to Ocean City.

2007 brought on another good showing by Cape May but it wasn’t enough to win.

With retirement of the cup on the line, Cape May rallied in 2008 for what may have been one of the best white marlin bites on record. The team was down by 3 whites and 2 blues after day 1. On day 2 the club came back strong with many boats in the double digits for releases. Covert Mission release 18 that day to win the top boat and help drive the win for Cape May.

2009 was Another amazing year in Ocean City. 207 marlin released to tie the count from 2008…and we thought it couldn’t get any better? As always the OC club was a great host and it was clear that a good time was had by all. We ended day 1 tied…37 to 37 releases. Day two brought big seas and another great bite with many boats seeing over 20 white marlin and in the double digits for releases. In the end, Cape May pulled out the victory. The Viking 68 team earned top boat for the the competition and along with the other Cape May boats brought home the victory.

2010, we had a total fish count of 207 again but this time the Ocean City club found Victory.

In 2011 we postponed the event one week but still made it happen.  Cape May had another strong showing of boats and the competition was fierce.  After two days of fishing through rain and fog the score was 3075 to 3075, a tie.  As dictated by the rules the tie went to the OC Club who caught their last fish 3 minutes before Cape May’s last fish.
